Construction of stepped access connecting two garden levels using corten effect volcanic stone steps and dark volcanic gravel, integrating with existing rockery and Mediterranean vegetation in the surroundings.
The elevation between the lower garden area and upper terrace of this home in Vilanova del Vallès was precariously bridged by deteriorated wooden railway sleepers. The access was uncomfortable, unsafe and aesthetically disconnected from the rest of the garden.
The owners needed a solution offering comfortable and safe transit, but also providing a design element that would enhance the Mediterranean character of the space, respecting the natural rockery and existing plantings of lavender and succulents.
We designed a staircase combining the solidity of prefabricated steps with the warmth of volcanic aggregate, creating a path that seems to emerge naturally from the terrain.
We removed the old sleepers and prepared the bed for the new steps. We selected concrete slabs with an oxide finish that mimics corten steel, a material that dialogues perfectly with the earthy tones of the environment and surrounding Mediterranean vegetation.
Between each step and in the approach area we installed dark-toned volcanic gravel, providing natural drainage, visual contrast with the steps and a texture that complements the existing rockery on both sides.
The sides were kept with the original natural stone, creating a smooth transition between the staircase and the lavender and succulent beds flanking the path. The result is an access that seems to have always been there.
Concrete slabs with oxidized finish providing contemporary character without maintenance
Draining aggregate between steps contrasting with the warm tones of the treads
Natural stone edges framing the staircase without artificiality
Permeable system evacuating rainwater without accumulation
Lavenders, succulents and perimeter hedge respected and integrated in the design
Complete access transformation in just 2 days
